FAQ
Please read below. If your question is not in the list, feel free to contact the office for more information.
Q. What is the difference between hire date, start date, and seniority date?
A. Hire date - The date you are hired
Start date - Technically no longer exists, but used to refer to the first day of your first term certain. Once you achieve
a term certain, you are granted recall status, which allows the board to distinguish between TTOCs and Recall TTOCs. Recall TTOCs get priority over TTOCs for the next term certain position.
Seniority date - How many months you have built up for seniority. Once you receive your first term certain contract, your TTOC days transfer over into months, based on a 19 day per month model. If you had 64 TTOC days built up, it would transfer over to 3 months and 7 days
Q. How do I go up in steps on our salary grid?
A. Steps on the salary grid are based upon work days. As a TTOC, 1 work day equals 1 of a 1.0 FTE day. A half day TTOC equals 0.5 of a 1.0 FTE day. Once a TTOC has reached 170 1.0 FTE days, they go to the next step in the salary grid. Currently there are only two dates to submit an application to have the days transferred over into a new step - Nov 15 and June 30 of every year. The forms can be found in your MySD73 Zimlets.
Q. What if I'm in a term certain? Am I getting 1.0 FTE day for everyday I work, to go towards my salary grid?
A. In a contract, you are gaining FTE everyday based upon the FTE of the contract. i.e. if someone is in a 0.8571 FTE contract, each day they will gain 85.71% of a 1.0 FTE day (or 0.8571 FTE day), which means that they will have to work more days to gain the full 170 days in order to climb the salary grid.
Q. I forget the refusal codes for Oasis! What are they?
A. There are 5 different codes that you can select from. Once you have made your selection, the system will repeat it to you, to ensure that you have made the correct selection.
01 - Illness
02 - Family Reasons
03 - Personal Reasons
04 - Have an Assignment Already
05 - Not Qualified
Q. Dispatch has called me for a job, in which the subjects are outside of my teachables. Is it OK to decline based on not being qualified?
A. The short answer is yes; however the Oasis system will call those who are qualified first. If you are being called for a job that is outside of your qualifications, it means that there is no one left on the list that is qualified for the job, and is continuing on through the list on a rotation basis. Multiple TTOCs have accepted these calls, with the understanding that they will carry out the lesson plan to the best of their ability.
Q. The teacher did not leave a lesson plan. Help!
A. Stop. Take a breath. Did you:
1. ask the secretary if it was emailed?
2. check the teacher's mailbox?
3. check the teacher's desk?
If you have done all three, all is not lost. If you have internet, you can check out quick lesson plans on teachbc.bctf.ca or have a look for short activities in the New Teacher Handbook at http://bctf.ca/NewTeachersHandbook/
If you do not have internet, let the students guide you. Ask them what they did yesterday and what the teacher had set for homework / expectations for today. Keep it light, and keep calm. Do the best you can and leave the teacher a note about what you did cover.
Q. I was pulled from my Prep today, what does that mean?
A. As a TTOC you are to assume only the duties of the absent teacher. If you were were left work to do, and you were pulled from your prep, you are entitled to 0.25 extra pay for the day. If the teacher has more than one block of unassigned time for the day, administration is able to place you elsewhere in order to help out the school, for no extra pay.
Q. I was told to leave a lesson plan for the next day, is that my responsibility?
A. As a professional it is always wise to leave a tentative lesson plan for the next day outlining what should be covered. In the case that the teacher is away again and you are not able to return to the same classroom, the new TTOC will need to know where to go with the day plan.
Q. The teacher I am in for teaches outside the regular school hours, what does that mean?
A. If the teacher has a block of teaching before or after the regular school hours, you are entitled to an extra 0.25 daily pay, so long as you are present for that time. i.e. the teacher teaches an extra subject area for an hour before regular class starts.
Coaching is voluntary and is not entitled for extra pay.
Q. The Flu season is here and I do not feel well, what can I do?
A. As a TTOC you do not have any sick days that you can use; however, if you are in a longer call out for one teacher, and you are sick for two or less days, you are entitled to take unpaid days off and return to the same assignment afterwards.
Q. I heard there was money for TTOCs to attend conferences. How do I access these funds?
A. TTOCs have a separate Pro D fund than those who are working in a contract. A form is sent out at the end of April and must be returned to the KTTA office no later than May 31 to be reimbursed for any registration costs associated with a PRO D event. Currently the maximum reimbursement per year is $300, unless the account is oversubscribed, in which case it would be pro rated.
Q. I am in a term Certain Contract. Can I apply for these funds as well?
A. No, these funds are for TTOCs only. If you are in a Term Certain Contract, you have access to the school's Pro D funds and must access them.
Q. I am looking for benefits, but I turned down the district ones. What are my options?
A. Through the BCTF you can sign up for the Advantage program whereby you can build your own plan for either yourself, or you and your partner. Prices will vary, depending on the options you select.
